The island is a tranquil oasis, full of early autumnal colours in shades of blue, yellow, red and green.
This stunning Mediterranean island is the third largest Italian island and is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, approximately 12 miles from the mainland of Italy. It is the biggest isle in the Tuscan Archipelago.
The presence of numerous historic and cultural sites combined with extraordinary natural beauty, make this island one of the world's most magical and unique places.
Elba opened its doors to tourism during the 50s and thankfully the local administration and islanders safeguarded the waters, flora and fauna. Together with six other islands in the chain, Elba has recently become part of Archipelago Toscano National Park; this body protects 140,300 acres of sea and 44,200 acres of island habitats.
In the hilly area, dominated by Monte Calamita, formed over 400 million years ago, are the deposits of iron that made Elba famous. The minerals of Elba are of such exemplary importance that UNESCO has added the mineral areas of the Island to the temporary list of World Heritage geological sites. There are more than 150 types of minerals and precious stones found in the rich subsoil - quartz, hematite, tourmaline, pyrite, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, orthoclase, beryllium to name but a few.
Elba is known for its crystal clear blue waters and white sandy beaches; the exquisite richness of the landscape, both land and marine; an abundance of culture and nature and a wonderful Mediterranean climate, featuring warm summers and mild autumns.
All of this and superb Italian food and wine makes Elba the perfect destination for your walking holiday. The terrain is quite varied, and is divided into several areas based on geomorphology.
Although the island's perimeter is only 147 kilometres, the island offers a multitude of different landscapes: romantic fishing villages, little hillside hamlets, ancient castles, green valleys and enchanting coves alternate with splendid sand and shingle beaches.
Elba is an island steeped in history – from prehistoric times to the Etruscan and Roman civilisations. Pirate attacks and bloody battles raged here between those who wished to gain control over this small but strategically important island.
The most notable visitor to the island was the French emperor Napoleon I, exiled to Elba in 1814 for 300 days.
Elba has a particularly mild Mediterranean climate; the average temperature in late September is between 22 and 26C, (somewhat cooler in the mountains) and is usually sunny - perfect conditions for walking.
The landscape is un-spoilt with breath-taking panoramic views.
Elba combines simplicity, natural beauty and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
We will walk approximately 10-15 km per day, progressing from the Elban port of Cavo, travelling around the island by foot, boat and bus, staying in village B&B's and hotels. Your luggage will be transported to the next destination by taxi. We have found that with so much to look at, this pace suits most experienced walkers - giving you a chance to be alone with nature from time to time.
Luca will reveal the hidden wildlife and explain the basics of many concepts for you in an interesting yet light-hearted way, so that the history, countryside and its wildlife really come alive for you. He speaks good English and also fluent Spanish.
As we know, walking, talking, laughing and making new friends is good for our mind, body and spirit. These are some of the most enjoyable activities to participate in; ones that can reduce stress, ease muscle tension – and calm our minds.
You will find your fellow walkers are usually like-minded individuals who share a love of nature and connect with the great outdoors.
