MOROCCO TREK - Trip Dossier

This is a description of our two week trekking holiday in SE Morocco.

CamelsThe additional Essaouira option adds 4 or 5 days to the 2 weeks - and is very much worth it if you can spare the time!

Travel is usually on a Saturday (outward) - with return being either 2 weeks later, or after a few extra days down by the sea. Quite often, some people make other additional arrangements for earlier or later personal explorations.

From the UK we used to use British Airways or Royal Air Maroc, but recently both EasyJet and Ryanair have commenced budget flights, making the whole trip much much more affordable. What used to cost about £300 round trip can now be bought for as little as £100.

Sometimes, the planes get booked a long time in advance, so it's best to plan ahead if possible. Whichever method of travel you select, we strongly advise you to take out suitable travel insurance, which includes medical and personal accident risks (and repatriation costs) and cancellation.

The areas we trek in are remote, fairly rugged and not easily accessible by wheeled vehicle. You should consider your suitability for such trekking: Walking can be over rough ground at times, sustained for five or six hours at a time (with breaks), although we don't hurry. Although we do summit to a couple of high spots at about 2500 metres, most of the trek is through valleys and gorges - with opportunities for rest and relaxation. The ground is rocky and good footwear is advisable, though I myself have done the whole trek several times wearing hiking sandals only. The good thing is - the mules will carry all your luggage, so you don't need to scrimp!

Upon confirmation of your booking, we advise you of the necessary things to bring - probably the most important being a sleeping bag which is good “down to near freezing” - but don't worry - most of the nights are at lower altitudes and there, the temperatures are perfectly reasonable for camping. Most days you can be comfortable just in shorts and tee shirt.
